CAIXA

Architecture for critical banking operations (CAIXA)

2024 — 2025

Domain-driven architectural definition to modernize CAIXA's critical banking platforms without interrupting regulated operations.

Implementation details are withheld under a confidentiality agreement. The case describes the architectural decision and the perceived impact, not the client's internal operations.

Context

CAIXA's banking platforms, with high demands for availability, compliance and operational security.

Risk at stake

Coupling and structural fragility raised the technical risk of evolving sensitive flows.

Architectural decisions

What was decided, and why it was the defensible decision

Each decision below carries an alternative that was discarded. That is the point where architecture stops being a technical preference and becomes risk control.

  1. Domain boundaries before service boundaries

Decoupling started from separating business responsibilities, not from splitting the system technically into services. This avoided trading code coupling for distributed coupling, which is more expensive to reverse.

  2. Incremental modernization instead of replacement

The legacy was treated as a system in operation: evolving piece by piece, with what already runs coexisting with what is being replaced, and compliance preserved at every step.

  3. A standardized execution cycle as the basis for predictability

Uniform packaging across modules reduced environment variation as a source of risk, bringing production behavior closer to what is observed before promotion.

  4. Technical governance treated as part of the architecture

Decision criteria were made explicit and sustained over time, so the architecture could withstand team turnover and deadline pressure without being renegotiated every cycle.

Role

Domain-driven architectural definition and technical governance for incremental modernization.

Perceived impact

Fewer fragilities, more predictable evolution and more stable support for operations.

  • Controlled technical risk
  • Predictable evolution
  • Compliance preserved

Environment

Regulated context, multiple legacy systems and critical integration across business areas.
